Director of Electrical Engineering at TSI

The Director of Electrical Engineering is responsible for all phases of electrical engineering development for the functional group and strives to drive positive growth in the organization. This role requires leadership in executing projects under a multidisciplinary model – Product Management, Engineering, Service, Manufacturing, and Supply Chain. The Director works with the value stream Business Director, VP of Engineering, and other senior managers to meet product development objectives. This requires a demonstrated ability to lead people and manage projects to meet cost, schedule, performance, and quality objectives. 

 

What Will You Do?

In order to grow and build a successful career with TSI, you will:

  • Lead and manage all aspects of electrical hardware and firmware design process for new product development and continuation projects. This includes management of architecture development, design reviews, circuit board layout process and queue, and firmware development process.
  • Work closely with the VP of Engineering to manage a product development roadmap, develop a supporting resource plan, estimate product development requests, and establish development priorities. Ensure that development plans are both achievable and timely for the business.
  • Review business plans, product requirements, verification/validation plans, and other key deliverables for development projects. Ensure that development teams incorporate extensive customer feedback throughout the entire design cycle.
  • Drive teams toward meeting established commitments on milestones, budget, quality, and release dates. Ensure that product quality, performance, and margin goals are met.
  • Provide leadership and direction to electrical hardware and firmware engineers, technicians, supervisors, and managers, holding regular team meetings and individual touchpoints to establish a cohesive team.
  • Act as a mentor to technical staff, especially more senior engineers and supervisors. Ensure direct reports are engaged and challenged.
  • Implement and reinforce best engineering practices, including electrical hardware and firmware architecture, electrical component selection, design modularity, extensibility, reusability, and maintainability.
  • Leverage experience and strong communication skills to collaborate closely with marketing, regulatory, quality, supply chain, and operations to meet ambitious project development timelines.
  • Work with the engineering team and ensure that individual goals and objectives are established and tracked throughout the year. Hold performance reviews with the engineers.
  • Ensure that both agile principles/processes and new product development phase gate processes are followed. Support compliance audits as necessary.
  • Communicate status of active development projects to company stakeholders. Ensure that project management methods are followed and project metrics are maintained.
  • Look for ways to minimize design cycles and development cost through implementation of standard platforms and components and best practices.

 

What Do You Need?
Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or a related technical field
  • 10+ years experience in embedded systems design, including hardware and firmware architecture and development
  • 3-5 years experience leading and managing engineering, product development, or research teams
  • Proficient in MS Office software tools, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Visio, etc.

 

Desired

  • Master’s Degree or PhD
  • Experience leading Systems Engineering teams/processes
  • Knowledge of Design for Manufacturability, Design of Experiments, Design for Six Sigma, Lean Design, and FMEA are desired
  • Previous experience with embedded or cloud software development

 

Knowledge

Electrical Engineering:

  • Familiar with printed circuit board layout software and processes, including schematic capture, simulation, footprint generation, circuit board layout, and circuit board assembly process
  • Familiar with EMC emissions, immunity, and ESD testing
  • Familiar with embedded firmware development and testing

 

Project/Practice Management:

  • Create and execute project work plans and revise as appropriate to meet changing needs and requirements
  • Estimate and manage budget for functional team
  • Identify resources needed and assign individual responsibilities
  • Review operational aspects of projects
  • Effectively apply our methodology and enforce project standards
  • Prepare for financial reviews and quality assurance procedures
  • Balance exposure to risk on project against other priorities, such as schedule or cost
  • Ensure project documents are complete, current, and stored appropriately
  • Lead proposal efforts, including completing project scoping and level of effort assessments
  • Understand basic revenue models, P/L, and cost-to-completion projections and make decisions accordingly
  • Assure project legal documents are completed and signed
