Embedded Software Engineering Manager I

JOB SUMMARY

The Embedded Software Engineering Manager is responsible for all phases of embedded software development and strives to drive positive growth in the organization.  This role requires leadership in development projects using Agile development methods in a multidisciplinary model – Product Management, Program Management, Engineering, Service, and Operations.  The Software Engineering Manager works with counterparts in hardware engineering, cloud development and other cross functional resources to meet product development objectives.  This requires a demonstrated ability to lead people and manage projects to meet cost, schedule, performance, and quality objectives. 

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides leadership and direction to the software engineers, holding regular team meetings and individual touch points in order to establish a cohesive team.
  • Implement best practices in software development, including OOD, modularity/components, extensibility, reusability, and maintainability.
  • Responsible for the overall architecture of TSI’s on-device software.
  • Works closely with Product Owners and Project Managers to develop and manage a product development roadmap and supporting resource plan using Agile development methods.  Ensures that development plans are both achievable and timely for the business.
  • Works with the software team and ensure that individual goals and objectives are established and tracked throughout the year.  Hold performance reviews with the engineers.
  • Ensures that both agile principles / processes and new product development phase gate processes are followed.  Supports compliance audits as necessary.
  • Reviews business plans, product requirements, verification/validation plans, and other key deliverables for development projects.  Ensures that development teams apply Agile / lean practices throughout the entire design cycle.
  • Works with project teams towards meeting established commitments on milestones, budget, quality, and release dates.  Ensures that product quality, performance, and margin goals are met.
  • Communicates status of active development projects to company stakeholders.  Ensures that project metrics are maintained.
  • Looks for ways to minimize design cycles and development cost through implementation of software best practices
  • Ensure your direct reports are engaged and challenged.

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED

  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering, computer science, math, physics, or an applicable technical field.

  • 3 years of supervisor/management experience or an advanced degree with 3 -5 years of experience.

  • Knowledge of Agile principles required.

 

DESIRED

  • MS or PHD in technical field

 

KNOWLEDGE

SKILLS/LANGUAGE/TOOLS

  • Good understanding of the following languages:  C#, C++, C,
  • Knowledge of the following tools:  Visual Studio, .NET,  MFC, Windows API, SharePoint
  • Embedded Linux and RTOS environments
  • Understands software architecture
  • Possesses a strong scientific coding background
  • Experienced with hardware control
  • Creates and executes project work plans and revises as appropriate to meet changing needs and requirements
  • Identifies resources needed and assigns individual responsibilities
  • Reviews operational aspects of projects
  • Effectively applies corporate methodology (e.g. agile) and enforces project standards
  • Prepares for and engages in quality reviews
  • Helps identify and minimize risks early in a project
  • Ensures project documents are identified, developed, and updated per project need
  • Leads proposal efforts including completing project scoping and assessments
  • Assists with project budgeting
  • Helps drive Intellectual Property (IP) submissions for the team

  • Holds regular status meetings with the team
  • Effectively communicates relevant information to upper management
  • Assists with preparing and delivering well-organized presentations
  • Resolves and/or escalates issues in a timely fashion
  • Understands how to communicate difficult/sensitive information tactfully
