Who Are We?
Are you someone that likes new challenges? Do you want to explore new technologies and help solve some of the world’s most difficult problems, like air quality and safety solutions? At TSI, these opportunities are real. Our engineers work with industry-leading experts both internally and externally. We encourage and enable our engineers to get into the field with customers to better understand their issues and solve their problems. At TSI, you make a difference – every day.

Scientist II at TSI
The primary role of the Scientist II is to lead the testing effort for development projects and act as a measurement subject matter expert. A person in this role will create test plans, author test reports, work with technicians to perform tests, and document the test results. This role will have contact with the systems engineers, technicians, design engineers, project management, metrology, quality, marketing, sales, customers, and tech support.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a disciplined and methodical approach to engineering and scientific problem solving and will independently address complex technical challenges. A strong foundation in thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics is required. Expertise in one or more of the following areas is desired: aerosol physics, physical gas dynamics, flow cytometry or hydrosol physics, optics, industrial hygiene, and indoor or outdoor air quality. This position will be responsible for design, development, and technical support of precision test instrumentation.

What Will You Do?

In order to grow and build a successful career with TSI, you will:

  • Evaluate existing methods and develop improved methods for particle, flow, and gas measurement instruments
  • Evaluate the feasibility of new measurement concepts and algorithms and demonstrate the ability to convert theoretical concepts into cost-effective, manufacturable instruments
  • Work with leaders in the field to evaluate, develop, and implement advanced measurement techniques; this can include working from published literature or directly with developers of licensed technologies, including products purchased from outside TSI or through product collaborations with outside companies
  • Publish papers and generate patent applications, relating to the company’s measurement needs; present a confident and capable impression to customers, by presenting engaging and relevant communications and papers, related to the field of particle technology
  • Serve as lead technical contact for customers in particle, air velocity, gas, relative humidity, temperature, and pressure measurement
  • Develop and execute subsystem- and system-level feasibility, verification, and validation test plans
  • Conduct verification and validation tests for new products, including data analysis and reporting
  • Define standard laboratory test procedures and communicate them to relevant stakeholders
  • Under the guidance of management, direct and inform the work of laboratory technicians
  • Drive testing activities to meet schedule commitments
  • Develop and execute calibration processes for measurement instruments
  • Assist in developing uncertainty analysis of calibration systems
  • Provide engineering support to manufacturing personnel to solve production problems and improve processes
  • Participate in technical reviews, offering insights on design, especially from a customer’s perspective
  • Provide communication to and support for key OEM customers and development partners
  • Develop knowledge of competitors’ instruments and methods for particle, air velocity, gas, humidity, temperature, and pressure measurement
  • Estimate task duration and resource requirements to establish customer commitments
  • Work cooperatively with other departments to develop best practices

What Do You Need?
Required

  • Master’s Degree in engineering or the sciences from an established research institution with 1+ years of experience in a product development or research and development environment as a scientist or engineer OR
  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or the sciences from an established research institution with 3+ years of self-driven or independent research experience at an established research institution
  • Strong background in particle technology, especially in measurement and instrumentation
  • Excellent experimentalist, rigorous documentation, and reporting
  • Strong understanding of problems and best-practice solutions with photometers
  • Expertise in fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and optics
  • Experience converting requirements into tests
  • Experience with modeling tools, such as COMSOL, Matlab, Fluent, Ansys, etc.
  • Possess a large toolbox of theoretical and practical tools to tackle problem solving (simulation tools, CAD, modeling tools)
  • Experience performing uncertainty analysis of complex calibration systems
  • Experience performing data analysis and statistical analysis
  • Proficiency in a programming language, such as Python or C/C++
  • Proficiency in programming and building data acquisition systems, both hardware and software (custom, LabView, etc.)

Desired

  • Ph.D. in engineering or the sciences from an established research institution
  • Experience advising, teaching, and working with laboratory technicians
  • Strong understanding of problems and best-practice solutions in detecting, counting, and sizing particles
  • Developing products used for environmental monitoring applications
  • Knowledge of and experience with thermal-anemometers velocity measurement, gas measurements techniques (FTIR, FID, PID, NDIR, and EC), temperature measurement, humidity, and pressure measurement
  • Knowledge of data analysis and data inversion techniques for electrical or optical particle detection/sizing
  • Experience developing products used for environmental monitoring applications
  • Working knowledge of generating and interpreting intellectual property
  • Working knowledge of calibration best practices and accreditation requirements and standards
