Technical Category Manager

JOB SUMMARY

The Technical Category Manager is responsible for developing sourcing strategy for, and the management of, assigned categories for TSI and related TSI Companies.  This position will be responsible for sourcing and supplier management of Mechanical Category (Metal Fabrications, Plastic Molding, Machining, Hardware, Filters, Gaskets, etc…) parts and assemblies and other categories as assigned.  The Technical Category Manager will be accountable for cost management, supplier performance management, the negotiation and establishment of long-term agreements, as warranted, and interfacing with other internal personnel. This position will also have responsibility for leading the category teams for their assigned category areas.

  1. Working directly with the Supply Chain Director, effectively lead category areas assigned to ensure best total cost of ownership of material and service acquisitions, including the negotiation of supply agreements on behalf of TSI and related TSI Companies.
  2. Provide leadership and mentorship to tactical level supply management personnel within the operating locations.
  3. Lead the development of effective strategies for assigned categories, with a global perspective.
  4. Lead the continuous improvement efforts within the TSI and related TSI Companies’ supply base(s) with regards to cost, quality, delivery, and first to market goals and objectives. 
  5. Optimize the number of suppliers in each category area, and work with those selected suppliers toward attainment of best in class performance levels for assigned categories.
  6. Support management of relevant dashboards for both internal and external (supplier) performance.
  7. Active member of ECO Board and responsible for the effective implementation of ECO’s for items in assigned categories.
  8. Active member of new product development (NPD) teams that affect assigned categories.
  9. Generate RFP & RFQ’s with external suppliers across a variety of commodities. 
  10. Provide detail analysis on RFP and RFQ’s with both financial and non-financial data, make recommendations, and present relative data to the Supply Chain Director and Project Management on new supplier selection and a variety of metrics on the supply base. 
  11. Lead a cross functional team to evaluate all sourcing decisions and to develop Category Strategies in a collaborative manner.
  12. Participate in lean manufacturing and administrative lean transitional events.
  13. Research and analyze industry best practices and drive improvements to achieve “best in class”.
  14. Be the recognizable leader at TSI for all assigned category areas.
  15. Follow all safety guidelines and report unsafe conditions to supervisor.
  16. Complete other assignments and special projects as required and assigned.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Manage, by influence, supply chain process execution with tactical level supply management personnel at TSI and related TSI Companies.
  2. Interview applicants and make hiring recommendations for tactical level staff, if requested.
  3. Coach and support all supply chain staff members.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or another related technical field is required. ISM, APICS Certification or graduate degree in a technical field is desired.

 

Experience

  • Minimum of 2 - 3 years of work experience in supply management.
  • Experienced in managing category areas/Leading cross-functional category teams
  • Minimum of 2+ years of Tier I ERP software experience.
  • Experience in a technical product manufacturing environment (low volume manufacturer preferred).
  • Lean manufacturing background strongly preferred.
  • Experience working in a multi-plant and/or matrix management environment strongly preferred.
  • Working with engineering to determine component requirements and ensuring they are properly translated into the specification.
  • Sourcing and category supplier management of Mechanical Category (Metal Fabrications, Plastic Molding, Machining, Hardware, Filters, Gaskets, etc.) parts and assemblies

 

 

TRAVEL

Travel as required for this position.   Estimated to be 10-15%.
